On this day April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, with the goal of landing on the Moon. The spacecraft carried three astronauts - Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. However, just two days into the mission, an oxygen tank exploded, causing serious damage to the spacecraft and putting the lives of the astronauts at risk.

The explosion occurred in one of the oxygen tanks in the Service Module of the spacecraft, which was responsible for supplying oxygen and electricity to the Command Module, where the astronauts were living. The explosion damaged the spacecraft's electrical system, which led to a loss of power, heat, and light. It also damaged the fuel cells that provided electricity to the spacecraft and created a dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide inside the Command Module.

The astronauts quickly realized the seriousness of the situation and worked with the Mission Control team at NASA to come up with a plan to bring them back to Earth safely. The first priority was to shut down the damaged systems and conserve power and oxygen. The astronauts moved to the Lunar Module, which was designed to land on the Moon, but was now used as a lifeboat to keep them alive until they returned to Earth.

Over the next few days, the Mission Control team worked around the clock to come up with a plan to bring the astronauts back to Earth safely. They used the Lunar Module's propulsion system to make course corrections and adjust their trajectory, which would allow them to enter the Earth's atmosphere at the right angle.

Despite the enormous challenges, the team at NASA was able to bring the astronauts back to Earth safely on April 17, 1970. The crew splashed down in the South Pacific, where they were picked up by the USS Iwo Jima. The successful return of the Apollo 13 crew was a testament to the incredible skill and determination of the astronauts and the team at NASA, who worked together to overcome a catastrophic situation and bring the astronauts back to Earth alive.
